It was built in the 9th century on a small peninsula situated at the entrance to the deep Vis bay. The Vis bay was named after it in the middle Ages becoming the Port of St George. There was also an islet at the entrance Škoj Sv. Jurja (the cliff of St George) as well as Jurjevo brdo (George’s hill) to the east, and St George is the patron of the town of Vis.
Serafin Topić, member of the People’s Party, long-time mayor of Vis (between 1895 and 1918), and the owner of the first steamship company on Vis (founded in 1891), purchased an estate on the peninsula of St George and built a villa on the site of the former barracks.
The Perasti tower, kaštil, was built by Vicko of Perast in Boka Kotorska, in 1617. He requested permission to construct from the general commissioner which he received on December, 16 1616 so the tower was built during 1617.
The beach received its name from the silver shine of its round stones under the moonlight.
On the southern slope of the hill that rises above Vino polje on one side, and climbs down to Velo polje on the other, an hour’s walk from Vis, is Podselje or Veo Selo, once the largest settlements on the island of Vis.
Sveti Vid is at the top of the hill and is located in the centre of the Vis plain where there is a small church of the same name which dates back to 14th century.
Mala travna is a beautiful little bay located on the southern part of the island and surrounded by inclined plateaus that lower into the crystal clear sea which is always a few degrees colder when compared to the nearby Srebrna.
The house of the Zamberlin family was built in the 16th century in the style of the Late Renaissance.
